Kursbeschreibung  

This course is designed for graduate students and researchers of all academic disciplines. It offers some theoretical insight into the differences between speech and writing and focuses on spoken language. There will be an opportunity to give a 10-minute presentation and get feedback from your peers.

Main aspects covered:
1.    Differences between Speech and Writing
2.    Small Talk
3.    Academic Presentations

The sessions require an advanced command of the English language.- All interaction in English.

 
Lernziele

Main goals of these sessions are

  • to create an awareness of EAP as a functional variety of the English language by establishing its main characteristics.
  • to create an awareness of the differences between speech and writing by comparing production and resources of these two different ways of using the English language.
  • to create an awareness of the aspects that make an academic presentation successful by watching a presentation that goes wrong in all respects.
  • to apply these aspects in a “test run” in a relaxed context  with feedback from peers.
  • to be in a position to work on specific aspects of EAP skills independently by learning about strategies and resources suitable for self-study.
