In this workshop we are going to practise language that is useful for conferences – small talk, argumentation skills, phrases and expressions that guide your listeners through your presentation and engage their interest.

This session requires an advanced command of the English language. - All interaction in English!

Learning targets

Main goals of this workshop are:

  • to build  a repertoire of expressions  that can be used in language situations typical of the context of international conferences.
  • to develop an awareness of the performance aspect of presentations.

10./11.09.2020 Online-Seminar: Effective Visual Communication of Science (1,5-day)

Aim

You will learn to effectively communicate your own scientific ideas and results by applying best visual communication practices to your research communication. You will understand the principles and useful design approaches used by experts. You will get actionable advice and feedback on your own pre-submitted materials. It is an immersive online-seminar , structured, easy to follow, memorable, useful and fun.

Content:

Day 1 (9 am. - 4 pm.)

  • Communicating with scientific vs non-scientific audiences
  • Visual perception and what humans find intuitive
  • Visual organization: simplifying comprehension through structured layout
  • Eye-flow: effortlessly guide the audience through the design
  • Colors: how to amplify, not ‘fancify’
  • Discussion on pre-submitted figures: facilitator’s feedback on a selection of pre-submitted figures from participants
  • Drawing exercise & group work: participants draw a graphical abstract of their research and give each other feedback on how to improve

Day 2 (9 am. - 1 pm.)

  • Slides that amplify messages and don't distract when presenting
  • Discussion on pre-submitted slides: facilitator’s feedback on a selection of slides from participants
  • Posters: strategy and process for creating posters that attract and explain
  • Group work – posters feedback: participants share their posters and give and receive feedback

 

Method

  • Interactive online-seminar : fundamentals, real examples, and practical advice
  • Discussion on pre-submitted materials: ahead of the online-seminar, participants submit their scientific figures and slides and I prepare a selection. Everyone receives suggestions on how to improve their own communication.
  • Exercises & group work: everyone draws their research and shares their posters and we make groups so participants give each other feedback.

This course is designed for graduate students and researchers of all academic disciplines. We are going to explore the defining characteristics of written Academic English using sample texts and exercises. You will also have the opportunity to learn about strategies and resources that support you in your writing.   

We will address the following aspects:

  • Academic English
  • Linguistic characteristics
  • Genres
  • Communicative purpose and rhetorical structure
  • Presenting Facts – Presenting Opinion
  • Hedging – how to put it carefully
  • Citations
  • Flow – Make your Writing Easy to Read
  • Linking words and phrases
  • Information structure
  • Useful resources and strategies for improving your Academic English

 

These sessions require an advanced command of the English language. - All interaction in English.

  • to develop  an awareness of EAP as a functional variety of the English language by establishing its main characteristics.  
  • to be in a position to work on specific aspects of EAP skills independently by learning about strategies and resources suitable for self-study.

22.10.2020 - Forschungsethik: Verantwortungsvolle Forschung und Innovation. Ein Workshop aus dem Programm für neuberufene Professor*innen

Kursbeschreibung

Forscherinnen und Forscher sind mehr denn je gefordert, den gesellschaftlichen Kontext ihrer Forschungsprojekte zu berücksichtigen und diesen in ihren Drittmittelanträgen zu erläutern. Die Europäische Union fasst diesen Ansatz, die Distanz zwischen Gesellschaft und Wissenschaft zu verringern, unter dem Namen „Responsible Research & Innovation“ zusammen. EU Anträge, die diesen Themenkomplex nicht berücksichtigen, werden zukünftig nicht mehr bewilligt werden. Ethik in der Forschung generell ist auch bei nationalen und anderen ausländischen Förderern zunehmend ein relevantes Thema, um die Qualität der Forschung sicher zu stellen.

Auch der CAU ist es ein Anliegen, ihre Forschenden dabei zu unterstützen, ihr Bewusstsein für Responsible Research & Innovation zu stärken. Es werden Möglichkeiten aufzeigt, den Ansatz in ihrer eigenen Forschung und Lehre zu verankern. Der Workshop findet in deutscher Sprache sowie z.T. unter Verwendung von englischen Kursmaterialien des EU-Projektes HEIRRI statt.
 
Folgende Fragestellungen werden im Workshop behandelt:

  • Was ist interne- und externe Forschungsethik?
  • Was bedeutet responsible research & innovation?
  • Welche Implikationen ergeben sich konkret für mein Fach sowie meine Forschungsprojekte- und vorhaben?
